A REMINDER TO LINK The NCSA High School Academic Program has been partnered with Food Lion and Harris Teeter for several years now to help raise money for the HS program. Each year, you’ve been asked to either link or re-link to one or both of these programs. It’s that time of year again! Harris Teeter’s Together in Education program simply asks that you “link” your VIC card once each school year. You can do so by giving the cashier our school code, 4682, with your VIC card when you check out or you can visit their website at https://www.harristeeter.com/default.aspx?pageId=32 to link your card. Again, you’ll have to note the school code, 4682, in the online request. Once your card is linked, our HS program will receive 2% of Harris Teeter brand purchases. Food Lion’s LionShop & Share program simply asks that you register MVP cards by following this link, https://www.foodlion.com/IntheCommunity/ShopandShare/secure/add.asp?CharityID=20231&txtCharity=NORTH%20CAROLINA%20SCHOOL%20OF%20THE%20ARTSor by calling 704-633-8250 ext. 3810. BENEFITS UPDATE NCFlex Benefits Program – mark your calendars! Annual Enrollment for the NCFlex Benefits Program will be held this Fall, September 29th through November 3rd. During this time, you can make changes to your NCFlex Benefits (Dental, Vision, Cancer, AD&D, Group Term Life). If you wish to have a Health Care or Day Care Flexible Spending Account during calendar year 2009, you must complete the enrollment form this Fall! Our Benefits Representative will announce when new benefits booklets will arrive, changes in coverage, and a schedule for informational/enrollment sessions on the NCSA campus. Revisions to the Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA) - in January 2008, President Bush signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act which includes an expansion to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The new provisions create new leave entitlements for employees who have a family member injured in service or called to active duty. An employee may use any of their 12 week allotment to take leave because of demands arising out of the fact that a spouse, son, daughter or parent of the employee is on active duty or has been notified of any impending call or order to active duty in the Armed Forces in support of a contingency operation. An employee may also take up to 26 weeks of leave during a single 12-month period to care for a spouse, son, daughter, parent or next of kin with illness or injured incurred in the line of duty while in the Armed Forces or National Guard or Reserves. The Family and Medical Leave policy has been revised by the Office of State Personnel and can be accessed via the OSP website at: http://www.osp.state.nc.us/manuals/man5.html. Employee Appreciation Week Survey – don’t forget to take the survey on the 2008 Employee Appreciation Week. You may complete the survey electronically, or you can print, complete and return a paper copy to the Human Resources Department. You can access the survey at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=aZ_2be027VqfjuSpokAuPHfA_3d_3d Workers’ Compensation Reminder – this is the time of year when we seem to have more injuries due to the nature of summer work. We wanted to remind you about the procedures that should be followed when an injury occurs during the course of employment. · If you are an employee who is injured while working, please notify your supervisor as soon as possible. · If you need emergency care, please go to the Emergency Room immediately. · If your injury is not an emergency, but you do need medical attention, go to the Highland Oaks Prime Care (off Hanes Mall Boulevard). · Supervisors – please notify Mary Ellen Haynes in Human Resources as soon as you know about the injury, either by phone call or email. · Supervisors, please complete the Form 19 (First Report of Injury) as soon as possible following the injury and forward to the Human Resources Department. Generally, Prime Care will call Human Resources to obtain authorization for treatment. It is difficult for us to determine whether or not to authorize treatment if we know nothing about the incident, and we certainly do not want to delay medical attention for the employee. There is a Medical Authorization Form that can be completed by the supervisor and sent with the employee to Prime Care. Copies are available in the Human Resources Department, and we will make arrangements to have the form posted to our website. Once the appropriate forms are received in Human Resources, the Benefits Representative will coordinate the process. Key Risk Management is our third party administrator for our workers’ compensation program; they investigate and process all claims. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Mary Ellen Haynes in Human Resources. CLASS & COMP UPDATE As we continue the implementation and enhancement of our HRIS systems with PeopleAdmin and Banner HR, one of our major goals is to build an electronic database of position descriptions. A recent audit of our files indicates that we do not have electronic descriptions for many positions on campus and we cannot fully implement the PeopleAdmin system without this information. In the coming weeks I will contact those that need to provide us with a current electronic copy of position descriptions in your area. If you have any questions, please call Susan Porter at 3318. RECRUITMENT Tips for using Adobe forms - Many of you are familiar with the hiring forms used to initiate the recruitment process, but did you know that on the bottom left-hand side of the adobe form, functionality allows for you to attach to the form itself all of the required supporting documentation such as a justification, position description organizational chart and vacancy announcement? Just use the “Attachments” tab on the bottom left-hand side of the form and attach all of the required documents. It’s as simple as using your “Attach File” option in Outlook.

ROUTINE ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL BUILDINGS ASBESTOS REPORT
June 25, 2008
Since some of the high school buildings at NCSA were built before 1975, they contain some small quantities of asbestos containing building materials and are subject to the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1985 (AHERA). These items are in safe locations or conditions whereby they do not pose a risk to students or staff. The School however is abating these materials as an ongoing process when renovations occur.
During the 2007/2008 School year multiple small projects occurred about the campus. Each of these projects was reviewed for the potential of asbestos presence or involvement. If a presence was known or found before or during the project an abatement project was included or added to the renovation or construction project. A like plan and procedure is anticipated for the 2008-2009 year.
In accordance with North Carolina State regulations, all asbestos abatement work must be performed by North Carolina Health Hazard Control Unit (HHCU) accredited asbestos abatement personnel. During the 2007/2008 School year no work occurred that involved asbestos abatement procedures greater than maintenance operation glove bag procedures. The fire alarm upgrade work on Lower Housing this summer (2008) has been engineered and reviewed by an accredited abatement design firm and will not require any significant asbestos abatement procedures. Any work that may occur will be extremely limited and of the glove bag category. Any work for this project will be performed in accordance with the AHERA regulations and the regulations of OSHA, DEHNR, and the EPA. These buildings are not AHERA required compliance buildings, since they are for adult education, but are being controlled under OSHA, DEHNR, and EPA related requirements.

NEWS FROM DESIGN AND PRODUCTION
1. Three MFA students that graduated this spring from D&P were invited to exhibit their design work at the Showcase West design exhibition held at UCLA last week. The five year old event is sponsored by the Hollywood Guild of Designers, is by invitation only and is one of the top design showcase events in the country for scenic, sound, lighting and costume design. The students invited to show their work included Kathryn Veillette (MFA ’08, scenic design), Allison Pokladowski (MFA ’08, costume design), and Anne Clark (MFA ’08, scenic design). In addition to NCSA, over 50 schools were represented at the exhibition, including design graduates from NYU, Carnegie-Mellon, Yale, Cal Arts, UC-Davis, and American Film Institute among others. D&P faculty member Franco Colavecchia (scenic design) served as a guest critic at the event.
2. Franco Colavecchia (scenic design faculty) recently completed a two week appointment as a guest faculty member in theatre design at UC San Diego, teaching theatrical rendering in scenic, costume and lighting design.
3. Robert Wildman (performing arts management) attended the joint National Performing Arts Convention and Theatre Communications Group (TCG) annual conference held last week in Denver. The convention, the second ever meeting of its type in the nation, brought together arts administrators, board members, artists, volunteers, service organizations, and arts educators from virtually all performing arts disciplines to discuss significant national issues in the arts that affect all arts organizations. In addition to the collective gathering, each of the major individual service organizations held separate sessions to discuss issues relating to their specific disciplines. The overall convention is scheduled to meet again in four years.
Conceived and coordinated overall by an organization called America Speaks, the core producers of this event were Chorus America, Dance USA, the League of American Orchestras, Opera America, and Theater Communications Group. In addition, some 25 other service organizations were involved at various levels, representing just about every conceivable discipline in the performing arts. The overriding theme of this gathering, to which just under 4,000 people attended, was to explore what the performing arts community might be able to do acting together to reposition the arts more centrally in our society.
4. Dave Olson (performing arts management) was elected last week to serve a three-year term on the board of directors of the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem. He was also elected to serve as the organization’s treasurer.

MESSAGE FROM CENTER FOR DESIGN INNOVATION
This season's schedule of Idea Exchanges is complete and we'll resume in September. Meanwhile, please join in two discussions to be led by visiting members of CDI's Executive Advisory Board:
4:00-5:30pm Wednesday 11 June
Larry Friedlander - Professor, Stanford University
Larry is an internationally known contributor to interactive arts and technology projects. His work during the past two decades has included collaboration with Apple Computer, Mitsubishi Electric, MIT, Oxford, Georgia Tech, and the Exploratorium. His "interactive Shakespeare" projects set the tone for much of the experimentation with digital narrative forms. His work with Apple involved development of innovative designs for the Globe Theater Museum in London. Larry is also a former Founder and Co-director of the Stanford Learning Lab. Funded by industry consortia, the lab's research addressed technologies for teaching and learning.
8:00-9:30am Friday 13 June
Alan Shaw - Professor, Kennesaw State University
Alan was the Technology Coordinator for the Algebra Project, a nation-wide mathematics literacy effort founded by Civil Rights leader Bob Moses. Alan distinguishes his work in educational outreach for the disadvantaged (e-learning), social empowerment (e-advocacy), and community building (neighborhood networking) by bringing methods from the arts and design to the learning of science, technology, engineering, and math. Educators have shown that these methods can be an effective strategy for inclusion of underrepresented groups in STEM subjects, such as girls and minorities

For many of you, this is the last EFE for a while. So, first of all: Thank you for all you do for our great school and for you part in creating a vibrant vision for our future.
Our second year together is coming to an end and I look back with a certain wonderment at all we have collectively achieved. Our pride in those who are about to graduate is intense, as is our bitter-sweet feelings in letting them go.
Please write to me during the summer and let me know what you are doing, as well as what are you reading!
I just finished Walter Isaacson's wondrous Einstein, a recent biography of Marco Polo and Kublai Khan, The House that George Built by Wilfrid Sheed (essential for anyone interested in popular song and terrifically written) and Brigitte Hamann Winifred Wagner. But I would love to know what you are reading. We can discuss it all in August!
If I do not see you for a while, please accept my profoundest thanks for all you do. Many of us will be at our desks all summer, and for you I say: See you Monday!
Keep safe and well.

THREE STANDING OVATIONS!
What an amazing performance at the State Senate on Wednesday morning! Rene Barbera sang one of the Metropolitan Opera National Competition arias (the one with all the high Cs), Ciera Payton and Travis Colbert performed Maya Angelou's "Phenomenal Woman," with the music of Leo Hurley and Josh Holritz broke their hearts on the violin. Each got a standing ovation.
And thanks to Dean Kerner for being our Master of Ceremonies.
All of you who helped make this performance possible are to be thanked, but, as usual, it is our students who show our political leaders just how precious our school is.
I wish I could have been there. Leo and I are in Leipzig where I am conducting the Gewandhaus Orchestra. And here's another bit of wonderful news: Two members of our Class of 2007 are playing in the orchestra! Imagine my surprise in my jet-lagged state to see both Dorotea Witt ('cello) and Elisa Friedrich (violin) in this 100+ orchestra.
You all continue to make me smile with my heart, as the song lyric goes.
Be well, and I will see you all on Monday.

We received a door prize that arrived after our festivities – A Free Massage – donated by Pamela Mays. We drew from the remaining employee names and the winner of this prize is Pamela Carter in Design and Production. Congratulations, Pam!
And lastly, we are interested in your feedback on this years’ Employee Appreciation Week, and will be conducting a survey to solicit your input. We encourage you to take part in this survey to help us plan for next years’ Employee Appreciation Week. More information will be forthcoming. We hope our committee represented you well during the planning process, but please remember, if you are interested in serving on the committee, please let me know.
I enjoyed working with our committee and certainly appreciate the expertise and effort that each of them brought to our planning process.
Thanks to everyone and have a great summer!

HIGH SCHOOL SURVEYS
Over the next few weeks, you may hear talk about a number of high school surveys that will be taking place on campus. Some of the surveys will be paper and some will be electronic. NCSA’s High School is gearing up for a reaffirmation of their accreditation from the high school division of SACS, AdvancEd.
The surveys are important elements in the reaffirmation of who we are and what our purpose is to the young students who spend time to train with us. While we are not like any other school across the country, the more we can perform analysis and evaluation of what we are, the more we are accepted by parents, students and key political elements. By periodically assessing our role as a unique institution, we prove our value to our constituents.
The surveys help us investigate the levels and dimensions of student engagement in the life and work of high school students, providing us with rich and valuable data on students’ belief, attitudes and behaviors about their experience, their involvement and their connectedness with school. Some of the data will give us performance and achievement data which helps in recruitment as NCSA truly prepares students for further educational and performance experiences.
It is critically important for students, faculty and staff to be thoughtful, serious and honest in filing out their surveys. As a result of responses, we will better understand our student’s needs and will be able to create a school environment that is engaging, challenging and productive.
The Office of Institutional Research is committed to accountability in safeguarding data collected, the ethical analysis of data and the privacy of its respondents.

NCSA Drama Students to Perform with Winston-Salem Symphony
Students from the NCSA School of Drama will perform with the Winston-Salem Symphony this weekend. Lindsay Atwood, Crystal Arnette, Ben Yannette, Danny Yoerges and Christy Young will share the compelling personal stories of European immigrants as the Winston-Salem Symphony performs Peter Boyer’s original score, “Ellis Island: The Dream of America.” Images of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island will be projected in the background. Boyer’s recording of his work – featuring actors Barry Bostwick, Blair Brown, Olympia Dukakis, Anne Jackson, Bebe Neuwirth, Eli Wallach and Louis Zorich with the Philharmonia Orchestra – received a Grammy nomination for Best Classical Contemporary Composition in 2006. Since its premiere in 2002, this profoundly moving work has been performed more than 50 times to wide critical and audience acclaim. Also on the program is Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony.
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17; 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18; and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20 – all at NCSA’s Stevens Center. The May 18 and 20 concerts are part of the Winston-Salem Symphony’s Classics Series; tickets are $15-$50. The May 17 performance is part of the Winston-Salem Symphony’s Kicked-Back Classics Series; tickets are $10-$35. (This is a 90-minute concert presented without intermission and the atmosphere is casual.) There are $10 student rush tickets available 30 minutes prior to each concert. ARTURO SANDOVAL CLASS
A protégé of Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval is a renowned jazz trumpeter, pianist and composer. On Thursday, May 22nd, Sandoval will teach a master class at 12:30 pm in Watson Hall.
Granted political asylum in July 1990 and US citizenship in 1999, Sandoval and his family now call Miami, Florida home. Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all over the world. Sandoval was voted Cuba’s Best Instrumentalist from 1982 to 1990.
